THE ROYAL CUP

A FILM IN PROGRESS

Over the past fifty years, beautifully carved sculptures and exquisitely painted ancient Maya ceramics have flooded into the world's public and private collections. These objects have transformed Maya studies. The images and texts have opened windows onto Maya life, literature, mythology and history. But because most of these came to light by looting, they also raise profound practical and ethical questions.

The Royal Cup is a feature documentary that explores the tangled moral and economic issues involved in the excavation, collection and study of ancient Maya art as well as the scientific breakthroughs that are illuminating the meanings of these precious objects.

The story is told through interviews with people actively involved on all sides of the issue: archaeologists, villagers and former looters in Central America; art dealers, collectors and museum curators; scholars unlocking the meaning of hieroglyphic texts and esoteric scenes created by master Maya artists, and scientists using a nuclear reactor to determine the chemical composition of ancient ceramic vessels. These conflicting voices will bring to life the complicated issues involved in collecting and studying ancient artifacts.

On a purely sensual level, the program will celebrate the artistry of these monuments and vases. It will use visual fascination as the doorway to intellectual and emotional engagement. Dramatic re-enactments and animated graphics created from ancient artwork will highlight Maya history and culture.

The Royal Cup is being produced with major funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Production is currently underway, and completion is expected before the end of 2012.
